Students are admitted into the Department through a competitive entrance examination (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination-UTME) organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) provided that they posses a minimum of 5 credit passes at the SSCE/WAEC/GCE or equivalent obtained in not more than two (2) sittings, and must include, English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agriculture and Physics.
The Department runs a 5-year programme leading to the award of B. Agric (Animal Science and Animal Production).
The main focus of the programme is to train the students to acquire the techinical proficiency and know-how required for successful management of modern livestock enterprises. To achieve the practical aspects of the trianing, the students do farm practice (University General Courses-UGC) from 100 to 300 levels. Furthermore, the 400 level is practical year, wherein the students undergo only practical trianing (SIWES- Students Indusrial Work Experience Scheme) in all aspects of agriculture at the University farm. They return to classroom after the practical training of two semesters to resume normal academic work and to carry out research project leading to their graduation.
The Department runs postgraduate programmes aimed at imparting specialized knowledge and skill and further develop the spirit of research, leading to the attainment of high level of expertise in specific area of animal agriculture by the graduate students.
These ojectives are achieved through course work and research in an atmosphere of intellectual independence and individual creativity.

Master of Science Degree (M. Sc.) & Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph. D) in:
a. Ruminant Animal Production (Cattle, Sheep and Goat)

d. Rabbit Production
